New guys new sound, killer record

From Mark's departure came Paul. Paul was a legend in Maryland, drummer for the Muffins of progressive fame, and having played with many famous musicians over the years. he became a great friend. But he relocated to Arizona to hang with Tool and Primus. But Before that he brought in an old friend Mike Gallway for bass (as Cody left for the Airforce). Mike is an imposing guy, huge, with a huge bass sound. He has been on many CDs, owns more basses than I do guitars, 15 strings and all kinds of unique gear...but most importantly he is a monster player. He brought in his drummer from Apothecary, Gary Venable. I can honestly say he is the best drummer I have ever played with. He is a career musician having played everything, and played with many great MD acts, and toured the world. So I am blessed now with a three piece that sounds like a freight train bearing down on you. The songs have been written for two years and due to various reasons recording them has strung out longer than desired. We have Drew Mazurek producing which is great. He has done many big bands and done them well. We hit his studio May 18 to do drums. My own studio is complete now ready for vox and final guitars.

October 2010

The quest for a new drummer was a windy road. Mark, a co-founder to the band, and the band parted ways in late 2009. Mark had a lot of personal demons to work out and though we loved him dearly, the band could not move forward with all of the negative forces, personal distractions, and turmoil. We found a great drummer locally, but he was sadly too highly committed to another project to give this one the time needed to make the next record and meet our live schedule demands. We parted on very good terms as a mutual decision and we wish Keith well as he is a great guy and brilliant drummer. We searched on. In May 2010 we received an email from Paul, a drummer of considerable acclaim, the 1970s underground progressive band “The Muffins,” DC’s very famous band “9353,” among many other things. He still plays with “The Muffins” as well as “Thee Maximalists.” Paul liked the material and agreed to work on this new record.

Cody, the fabulous bass player we added after recording “Killing Time,” and who supported us on that tour, was at a crossroads point where he was growing steadily at work and in other personal endeavors but struggling to keep up with the level of commitment necessary to write and record a record. He’s on hiatus for now as he works through this all, and we wish him all the best…and expect we’ll see him down the road some day. Through Paul we were able to get a tremendous bass player with many records and bands under his belt, Mike. He brings great experience and aggressive bass playing, 4-string, 5-string, fretless, acoustic, bass and more.

So we are in the final stages of solidifying the arrangements and the individual player’s parts. We should be entering the studio for the final recordings in November to December 2010. The draft album title is “Breakfast Serial,” with serial intentionally spelled that way.

Supporting the scene

We are thrileld to death with every fan that makes a show...we know this economy is very tough so it means so much when you get out. It is very tough as well on the clubs that are losing lots of business over this, and the bands who have seen huge reductions in audiences. It's just bad all around but there are some things we can all do to help where we can.

Bands need to support other bands like a big family. See other bands' shows when you can so they have fans, don't leave a show after you are done playing so you and your fans can help the next band and the one before you heped you and son on. Bands can trade gigs at their home clubs and provide fans to protect the guest band. Bands can work real hard marketing the scene, their shows, the clubs that are good, the good promoters, and so on...it benefits us all.

Fans can help by spreading the word and helping bands bring in new fans. It's all about fans standing in front of that stage that in the end makes or breaks bands and without fans a band just will not survive.

There are a number of people committed in MD to hanging onto the heavy music scene, breathing new life into it...they support bands in these hard times and in turn we really urge all of you to support them.

Sinix. Great venue in Essex. They do not rip off bands, have great drink specials, and are committed to bringing good music from MD and beyond to you. They are working very hard to provide the scene, our part is fill that club!

Krug's Place in Frederick. Like Sinix you have an owner with vision, trying hard to bring great music, local, regional and national to the stage for you...treats bands great...and is in desparate need of people to fill those shows...without the fans the clubs can't stay in business.

Ravenhurst Entertainment Group...bringing killer shows to the area, providing a label and distribution to good bands, re-energizing Shockwave Magazine. Their director works tirelessly to build the MD scene...if you can find Ravenhurst shows to see, often at Sinix! The bands are always good, he is very picky so you get the best music.

Shockwave Magazine. This is MD's heavy music press...fighting to stay in business. Know a company that wants advertising...send them there. We need a great magazine around to keep our scene active, thriving. This magazine is awesome.

There are many more out there, bands, individuals...great people trying to work together to bring great music to MD. If you can support a band, a club, etc., go as often as you can...be a part of a revolution.
